“In 1921, early suffragettes often donned a bathing suit and ate pizza in large groups to annoy men…it was a custom at the time”
Four for you, ladies.
oh my god
ALL. THE. AWARDS.
i was seriously questioning the legitamacy of this photo and i didn’t think people ate pizza in the US much earlier than the middle of the 20th century, so I did some research…
before the 1940’s pizza consumption was limited to Italian immigrants and their descendants (via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_pizza)
then, i searched for the image on google image search and found this site: http://www.shorpy.com/node/10587?size=_original
with this caption:
July 31, 1921. Washington, D.C. “Pie eating contest at Tidal Basin bathing beach.” In the back row: the blurry but unmistakable facial contours of Iola Swinnerton. National Photo Company Collection glass negative.
and it is actually clear they are eating pie when you view the image zoomed in. it saddens me that this kind of misinformation float around the internet and gets over 39,000 notes.
MORAL OF THE STORY….don’t believe everything you read on the internet, people!!!!!
