Recipes by Irma: Banana Cake
(in which I attempt to recreate recipes from my vintage 1963 edition of “The Joy of Cooking”)
Thursday nights are T.V. night in my house, where a group of four get together to watch the NBC line up (Outsourced is our favorite!). Since 3 of 4 have birthdays in January and February, we decided to make it extra special with a potluck. I chose dessert. A banana cake, c/o Irma.
So the thing with...
If Dresses Could Talk...
A dress from my shop (found at a thrift store):
A mod fashion advertisement from 1967 (found in someone’s mother’s basement):
The Fur Pill Box Hat
One of two estate sales this weekend were worth the drive and wait in line. I fell in love at one of them actually.
Actually, while we were in line at one of them (the lame one), boyfriend and I were joking about meeting your husband at an estate sale. I pondered this. What an interesting story to tell people. Of course, only people who go to estate sales would find this interesting. Everyone...
Learning New Things Every Day
Today, on my thrifting adventures, I ran across a cream button up sweater that wasn’t particularly interesting except there was a phone number on the tag.
I got curious. Why is there a phone number in an article of clothing?
I took a picture so I could call it later.
I got customer service line of Haband!. Ok, so it is still in existence. But, doesn’t really tell me anything about...
Recipes by Irma: Quick Orange Bread
(in which I attempt to recreate recipes from my vintage 1963 edition of “The Joy of Cooking”)
I love a good zucchini bread. And banana bread. So, why not a quick orange bread? A nice change of pace, don’t you think?
Irma has two different ways to make this. The second one is cut off up there. No one wants to go that route, trust me on this.
In addition, I halved the recipe. Ever halved...
Salon Style Walls
I’ve always loved the look of salon style walls. Probably something about feeling safer among clutter and chaos.
Last weekend, the three of us and Bonnie scrounged up every frame and poster we could find and set to work on our very own salon wall. I am quite pleased with the results.
Bonnie is also a fan. Although, she wanted to frame her favorite mouse and put it up there, but I told...
Golden Globes 2011 and Happy Monday!
So I watched about enough of the Golden Globes to see all the pretty dresses and then got bored and watched “I Used to Be Fat” instead. Very motivating.
While I loved almost everyone’s looks last night, here are my top 5 favorite dresses from the show:
*Note I haven’t looked at any “Best/Worst Dressed” lists yet.*
1) Scarlett Johansson in Elie Saab

Short Skirt and a Long Jacket
If you have spent any time in the coat and jacket section of the thrift store, you know and fear those long 80’s wool coats. You know, the millions of them with shoulder pads and everything?
In my perusings of the Pre-fall 2011 collections (pre-fall, really? It’s still winter, people), I have noticed that coats have decidedly increased the amount of fabric they are being made with....
Cycles of Fashion: Sequins
Sequins are EVERYWHERE if you haven’t noticed.
Would you rather have the Rolando Santana dress off of Bluefly for $182 (originally $304) on the left? Or the 1960’s version on the right from Erstwhilestyle on Etsy for $78?
